Here are some statistics about avocados in California:
  • Production
California produces 95% of the avocados grown in the United States and 10% of the world's production. In 2024, California's avocado harvest was expected to be over 350 million pounds, the highest volume in almost 50 years.
  • Growing areas
Avocados are grown in 15 counties, but the majority of the acreage is in Ventura, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Riverside, and San Luis Obispo counties. San Diego County is known as the Avocado Capital of the United States, producing 40% of California's avocados.
  • Avocado varieties
The Hass variety is the most popular, accounting for about 95% of the total crop volume. Lamb Hass and GEM are the next two most popular varieties.
  • Growing conditions
Avocados need warm sun during the day and cool breezes at night. The state's rich soil, fresh coastal breezes, and California sun are ideal for growing avocados.
  • Avocado trees
It takes about 14–18 months to grow a single California avocado. One California avocado tree can produce about 150 avocados per season.
  • Industry history
The avocado industry in California expanded rapidly in the 1970s and 1980s, but a market crash occurred in the early 1990s. The industry was revived through aggressive marketing and reduced acreage, but drought and increasing water prices have led to further acreage reductions in recent years.
