Seeking coastline and wine in California? Buying a home in California can be expensive, with median home values well above the national median value.

Only about half of California's residents are homeowners. In 2020, the state had roughly 14.4 million housing units and a homeownership rate of 55.9%, according to a U.S. Census Bureau survey.

The median value of single-family homes in the Golden State was $813,980 in April 2021, more than double the $347,500 U.S. median value. But California is more than its pricey coastal cities, and home values can vary, depending on where you're hoping to settle down.
